Heavy emphasis will be given to candidates who have local housing. Insights as to what it takes to enter the world of professional theatre as well as a practical knowledge of the skills necessary in both the theatrical and everyday workplace will be experienced throughout the summer season. Professionals in each of the above disciplines are the immediate supervisors of each of the interns, providing professional guidance and skilled training in these disciplines – within an environment impossible for most schools to replicate. Master classes and symposia presented during the past three years of the program included those by Broadway performers, New York directors, choreographers, designers, musical directors, casting directors and Actors’ Equity Association union representatives. All Interns are involved in both Mainstage and Theatre for Young Audiences productions! This will be an intensive immersion in professional theatre for two and a half months! If you are interested in joining our Acting Intern Company, you must attend the local, New York or StrawHat auditions and let us know at the time of your interest in this program. Please see additional information on the Auditions page. If you absolutely cannot attend any of the above auditions, you may email your photo and resume for consideration. (Note that it is rare for us to cast anyone without an in-person audition. Under extraordinary circumstances we may permit a video/dvd audition for internships only. Please note your interest in our internship program.) Gretna Theatre Design, Stage Management and Technical Theatre Interns are fully immersed in the production of professional summer theatre. We will produce seven fully-staged shows in June and July: Sally Struthers in Nunsense The Marvelous Wonderettes (regional premiere) The Will Rogers Follies The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Peter Pan Mr. Hobbs' Vacation Mame Broadway and New York actors play leading roles, with New York and nationally recognized directors and choreographers. Interns are involved in the design and execution of the technical aspects of the shows - scenic design, construction and painting, lighting design and crew, sound design and crew, props design/procurement/set decoration and crew, costumes design and prep, running crew. Interns also participate in all five Theatre for Young Audiences productions which are performed on Saturday mornings during the season. Some technical theatre experience is preferred but not absolutely necessary. Gretna Theatre House Management and Box Office Interns will participate in all areas of audience services and volunteer management. Box Office Interns must be comfortable with computer systems for ticketing (training provided) and have an affinity for interacting with our patrons. A good telephone manner, ability to speak well, and neat appearance are all critical to our success as this position becomes the first impression for our customers. (We do NOT do telephone sales calls!) House Management Interns prep the house for the audience for five performances per week, interact with stage management and box office staff regarding the timing of opening the house, oversee volunteer ushers, program stuffing, tearing tickets, customer service in person. Again an affinity for working with the general public is critical. These internships are an opportunity to learn more of the business of theatre where it counts - in customer service. Theatre experience per se is not required, some retail experience (cash and credit card sales) may be useful. Most positions begin mid- to late-May, depending on school schedule and release. Mentoring by professional staff. Learn by doing! If credit is available from your school, we are happy to provide further information to your advisors. Those with access to local housing and transportation are given preference, only due to the number of rooms available to us for housing. To apply for Technical, Design, Stage Management, House Management and Box Office Internships, Email resume, references and cover letter indicating your area of interest as soon as possible. You may also attend the local auditions in February/March at the Mt. Gretna Fire Hall, Mt. Gretna, PA between (time and date will be announced on this website and others).
